Dreams of Air and Flight

Dear Year 5,

I hope that you enjoyed our trip to The Barbican to watch the London Symphony Orchestra perform “Dreams of Air and Flight” as much as I did.

Your behaviour was excellent, both travelling and whilst at the concert. I think you represented our school values extremely well.

I would now like you to write a review of the concert for me. I am sure that this will be helpful to the London Symphony Orchestra to know what you thought of the concert.

What parts of the concert did you like the best? Why? What bits were most memorable? Was there any music you didn’t enjoy? Have you got any questions you would like to ask about the music or the performance? Was the concert what you were expecting? Were there any surprises? Did any of the instruments grab your attention? Would you like to watch the Orchestra perform something else? How did this trip compare to other school trips you have done at school?

I really look forward to reading your replies and I will send a link to the LSO so they can read what you have written!,

Many thanks,
Mrs Schneider

PS, I will put your beautiful bird pictures up on the blog as soon as I get a spare minute! If you would like to sing along at home here is the link to the songs https://soundcloud.com/paul-rissmann/sets/farther/s-bZ3tb

  1. Dear Year 5,
Thank you for coming to our Dreams of Air and Flight School Concert. We loved having you there and I have really enjoyed reading your comments. We are very proud of our music, especially FArTHER and Star Wars, so I’m pleased you enjoyed it. Hope to see you again!

  2. Hello Year 5! Sorry not to reply to you before, but we’ve been away on tour since you came to see our concert. We have been in Germany and Spain and on Tuesday we go to Paris.
We’ve all really loved reading your reactions to our concert and seeing your pictures. I’m glad you liked the music and I can tell you that Star Wars is my favourite especially as I got to play in the real Star Wars films with the LSO a few years ago. I hope that you can come and see us again very soon. You’re very lucky to have a teacher like Mrs Schneider!

  3. Dear Mrs. schneinder,
I did not go on this trip. I liked most of the music from FArTHER, but some of it I do not like because of the lyrics. Sometimes with the pauses I come in to late or to early. I don`t like it, because I normally listen to pop music.

  23. Dear Barbican people,

I thank you for giving us a great experience! My favorite instrument there was the trumpet especially as the mute was inside, as it gave a gorgeous atmosphere. The flutes also helped give the atmosphere as the high notes is what really gave FArTHER a great look. You really let out the emotion to the story. My favorite song is the first one as it’s really catchy and it’s very accurate to the story. The ending bit, which was star wars was a great treat to our ears, especially to all the star wars lovers, including me, Fun Fact: i actually know how to play a bit of the song on the piano. Thank you for sharing this great experience again. Please give others a chance to see the great instrumental show. I also loved the harp too! It was great! The pictures showed mine which is what i enjoyed best

  24. I really liked the trip to the Barbican Theatre because there was more than a 1000 children there and more than 50 adults in the humongous theatre. I Also liked it when more than 3 schools got to to see me and Rory picture of penguins.
My favourite part of FArTHER was β€œSo many lovely wings”.
My favourite part of all of it was when they played Star Wars theme song.

  25. To the Barbican people,

I thank you for my lovely time experiencing all the songs and instruments. My favorite instrument was the trumpet because 1. It has lots of popular songs and
lines and then 2. I play the trumpet. The favorite part was the FARTHER, FATHER.This was amazingly great. hope I come back soon.

  33. In my opinion, the orchestra was simply the most thrilling experience. The musicians were inspiring and joining them was a treat. It was beautiful the music took me to another world. Personally, the percussion made me smile because currently i am learning percussion. music, songs and orchestras are AMAZING.Seriously.

In my opinion, i had a thrilling experience and joining in was a treat. The music was so calm it took me to another world of grace and cheerfulness. I thought it was lovely and the songs where so magical. The music put a smile on my face and made my day.

  35. The Babican concert was very good. I really liked the bit when they showed some of the bird pictures we did. I liked that the trumpeters played really good not really really loud. It was a bit imbarising for me when my picture was shown because i had to stand up. The show was awsome.

  36. IT WAS AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i loved the Violins and how they sounded in future i want to learn how to play it. i especialy liked the trumpets and i learned a bit how to play it. i enjoyed the ending when they made a suprise and played us the STAR WARS SONG. I thought that the musicans were very talented!!!!!!!!

  37. I loved the show.It was really impressive i,especilly liked it when they beet the world record . i want to know how long it took you to learn all the the songs . I
think maybe a year or two .

  38. It was very inspiring and the orchestra was very good,I especially liked the Star
Wars song at the end.If there was one thing you could change I think the brass could have had a bigger role.

  39. Hi I really liked the show at the Barbican and it was very interesting when the trumpets played with the mute in. If I could come again i would because it was jolly and I really liked the colours that the people wore when they came out of the back of the stage. i also liked it when they were singing to us and i really enjoyed the pictures at the back on the board and when the lady trained our voices.

  40. I really enjoyed the concert at the Barbican. I loved how the orchestra played and how they demonstrated the different things that certain instruments can do such as how the trumpets can sound different with a mute in them. Also, the director explained why the instruments use that object such as why the trumpet used a mute especially in an orchestra and more. I loved how the London Symphony orchestra played, especially the violins. I also liked how they made it fair for all the people that were at the back and couldn’t see that much. They did that by having a camera showing the instruments that were being the main in each of the songs. I would really recommend it to other schools and would be joyous if I ever had the chance to see it again. Thank you for such an amazing opportunity!

  41. I would like them to play harry potter next maybe as everyone (hopefully) knows it except from that it was AMAZING especially when they broke a world record of the fastest time laying the bumblebee’s music.

  42. it was an exiting trip with really cool songs like star wars and e.t. it was cool how the mute changed the sound of the trumpet. it inspired me to play more instruments.it was a amazing trip i hope my brother gets to do it when he is in
    year 5 .

  43. The orchestra was BRILLIANT!!! It had elegant and mystical music and overall it cool and it was even cooler when they broke a record and did star wars.

    • When I went to see the Barbican orchestra perform it’s breath-taking music in Central London, i really enjoyed it because I really loved the way that everyone’s instruments came together to make that beautiful song. One of the biggest highlights of the trip was when you played the star wars tune, which is my favourite movie by far. I was astonished by the end because I love the music and the different sounds that the instruments made when you use different items on them.My favourite song was “my father dreamed of air and flight” from the book you know FArTHER I loved the orchestra bye .
