Year 5 music evaluations

I would like us to spend this week looking back at what we have achieved in our music lessons in year 5

Can you cast your mind back to September when we started with some percussion work. We learnt some Benjamin Britten songs – remember “cuckoo!”? Straight after Christmas we embarked on our violin wider opportunities project which ended with a fantstic performance and a group who decided to continue learning. We then had a go at a musical futures project where we sang a 4 chord progression as a class and then groups experimented with singing fragments of songs over the top. Since then we have worked on sport songs.

Can you think back and decide for yourself where you think you have made progress. As well as sharing your thoughts about our school lessons can you also tell me about some of the musical experiences you have had at home. It may be that you have started listening to some new music, been to a concert, started learning a musicical instrument.

If you are a member of choir or take part in any of our schoolmusic clubs and lessons can you also leave me your comments about that.

Final question – we have a couple of free music lessons before the end of term- what would you like us to do as a class?

I personally would like to introduce you to some modern new “classical” music as it is something I haven’t really included in our lessons so far but I am open to offers!

I look forward to reading your evaluations!

  1. During the past few weeks year five has been learning different songs such as Bob Marley songs and little bird. Miss Schneider has been really helpful with teaching us the songs carefully and slowly. Its lovely to learn a new song in a new week.its been a very fun experience. Ukulele is my favourite instrument i learnt im very good at it and my brother and I still go ukulele club and to current song we are learning is Happy by Pharrel Williams.

The percussion instrument were very fun and i enjoyed is very much.I learnt to play the egg shaker and other instrument.

  3. year five is a fun and enjoying year of music. The best part of year five is the violin and djembays and claves. I think i am quite good at the violin and the shakers.

I dont go to a club after school but i would like a drum club.

I liked singing the world cup song and the support song, that was a quite fun song to sing. I would like to sing those sorts of songs again.

  4. During the past year, I had a great experience of the violin. I love it. Also, I loved other projects like: 1. singing
    2. claves
    3. rhythm
At home, I like to put the music on and dance or just lay down and listen to it. I attend piano lessons and in 2 weeks I am going to have exams. Piano is my life; for me playing the piano is so relaxing.
Now, for the last few weeks, I thought we could do a music show for the last day of school. Everyone would love it.
    We could also do:
    1.new songs
    2. guitar
    3. piano
    4. dancing

  5. During the past few years, I have had a wonderful time in music lessons.
My favorite music lesson was the violin lessons. We had a violin teacher in to teach us violin which was so fun and quite easy. The lesson which I fond easy was the xylophone because it makes a high sound which I like also the low sound which is very dull.
At home I like to hear music from the film called frozen because it is very relaxing when I do my homework. Also I play the violin at home as I have on at home. I used to the play the violin in tamil style but then I have stopped for this term and I might start again next term.
After school I go to a club called the Musical Theater which is lead by Miss Harmer.
We go and dance, act and sing by ourself in front of audience, who are the other children who come to the club with me. We are planning to do a play which we might act in front of the little kids. We are going to start practice our play on Fridays.
In the last few weeks of music lesson I would like to play on the xylophone and few other bigger instrument which are very difficult and very fun to play with as a big and wonderful class.

  17. I really enjoy music and I play the drums and it feel nice that you know how to play the drums. I would like to play the piano in music classes. 19. I think the music we do in Year 5 is very good and we all learn a lot. My main instrument I play is the guitar and I have learnt to play some instruments that I didn’t know how to play:
    -Piano
    -Violin

  20. well my music at school I enjoy aswell as my music at home. I liked playing the violin and singing three little birds by the man himself, BOB MARLEY!!! But most of all I loved PERCUSSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. I love music i think it’s a great thing to learn. I loved it when we learned the violin but when it came to the performance i felt 99% confident and 1% shy.The instruments that i love playnig is:
    Piano
    Violin.
However, I would like to play the:
Boom-Whacker and the Djembe more often.

  22. I listen to any kind of song that passes on adverts and sometimes google the song.
Sometimes i watch youtube videos and if i like the music i keep listening to it for EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. In my opinion, I really enjoyed music this year. Favourites include the violin project that we did a couple of months ago. This area of music was fun, and at the same time it gave me a challenge. Only last week, Year 5 sang a couple of sports songs in the hall. I found this to help me get used to performing in crowds. Overall, I loved the experience in general.

At home music is quite another story. I catch up on the latest songs and practice my exam pieces on my piano at home (please note that I am a grade 2 pianist). I understand that music is quite forgettable, so I practice every day. My โ€˜home musicโ€™ is very different to what I do at school.
In future, I would like music classes to be more adventurous and for us kids to have a wider range of things to learn, such as learning a mixture of old and new songs. I really like the idea of music projects being held, so I would like more to go forward. Overall, I liked music over this school year.

  24. I love music.Iv really enjoyed the music lessons,i loved the violin lessons and how i learnt it so quickly.

  25. This year, I’ve started guitar lessons after school. I’m really getting into it, though it is quite hard remembering all the notes.
I like the music lessons at school, but I don’t usually get picked to play an instrument.
I think we should do a bit more on the djembes – I really liked it.
    ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Oh no! I try to make sure everyone gets a fair turn with the instruments. How can we make sure it is fairer?

  26. I love music. i first got my guitar 2years ago and did not know how to play it so i went for guitar lessons and now i know how to play.

  27. I find music as a TIME TO RELAX, I found it easy to play instruments and would like to play more instruments. I found it hard to read the music notes

    • Me too! I still find it tricky to read from music but the more I practise the better I get!
Which music do you like to listen to at home?

  28. Year 5 was a fun music year i liked the violins a lot, it wasn’t really hard I enjoyed it very much.

I like the clubs especially ukulele club, I still go and i’m quiet good. I like the teacher he is fun and his name is,Tom.

The percussion instruments were fun to my favorite percussion instrument is the egg shaker.

  29. I have made a lot of progress on learning how to do the violin. I learnt about the parts of a violin and learnt how to play it by plucking and using the bow. I have enjoyed playing the percussion instruments as well. As well as learning instruments in school I also learn instruments outside. Learning the violin inspired me to play the piano. During piano lessons in the Sutton music centre, we play short piano pieces and scales. I started listening to music from different parts of the world, but mainly I like happy, cheerful music. For the last few lessons of music I would like to do percussion instruments or learn a new instrument for example a drum or a triangle.

  30. I have enjoyed learning the violin even though it was a bit slow and my fingers hurt when we were plucking the strings. At home, I like to play my electric keyboard to my own tunes and I wish I could teach the rest of the class so we can make a little performance out of them and mix them with other people’s tunes. ๐Ÿ™‚

  31. In year5 music lessons I liked it when we did singing for the world cup and sports day. I would love to play the piano and learn a song to play on it, I love the tune of the piano. The violin was great I loved leaning how to make it high and low, I liked performing with all the different songs. The warm ups and games with the bow were one of the best things. I am in choir and I love it singing in a big group with people who love singing as much as me is one of the things I love the most. My choir teacher Mrs A is one of my inspirations because she never gives up on us. If we get something wrong she helps us to make it right.

  32. I loved the violin lesson as well as the claves the lessons were very fun and cool.
    My top 3 music lessons
    1. Violin
    2.claves
    3. beats

  33. I think that I have develop my understanding of learning different ways to make music and playing the violin. I have learned about percussion instruments and how you use the bow for the violin. Music in school has inspired me to learn music outside of school. I am currently learning the guitar and piano; I am starting my grade 1 exams on both of them soon. During my guitar lessons,I know now how to play it well. For my piano lessons we get into groups and our piano teacher teaches us new pieces and different scales. Inside school I was picked to be a member of choir in year 3. For music classes in school I would like to suggest putting a music class of different music from all around the world.

  34. music is an amazing especially when your down in the dumps. play a tune and i fell happy again.
my best lesson was violin even do it was hard at the start i had got there in the end.

  35. During the past year ,I thoroughly enjoyed being given the opportunity to play different instruments as part of our lessons. Personally my favourite lesson was playing violin; being able to play different types of music at the end of the lessons . Usually at home I would listen to piano music as my mum is a pianist .I attend guitar lesson and in a few weeks time I will have an exam. If it’s possible for the next few weeks in school I would like to play the piano and be able to play many more songs .

    • This year in year5 I have enjoyed music. I love learning new instruments and having new teachers from Merton coming. Personally my favourite lesson in year 5 was learning to play the Violin, as I think this particular piece of instrument makes beautiful music. I think I can develop more on my skills. I am currently teaching myself how to play the piano and I am enjoying this very much also I am now starting to listen to piano music. This is a big change to the kind of music I usually listen to at home. Hopefully, we can start learning how to play the pianos in class. I love music! I think that this schools curriculum in music is amazing as I also attend Choir and I LOVE performing at concerts.

  36. Thank you miss we will try our best the only problem is I don’t have a drum set at home .May we please use the music room so you can record us.

    • Yes. It will have to be on a Monday or Tuesday lunch time. Come and see me!

  37. year 5 started percution back in September, we used lots of different entroments such as gemba ,boom wackers, claves ,camassa I injoyed it.
then We learnt some Benjamin Britten I remember โ€œcuckoo!โ€ it was one of the best. affter that we did our violin project whith miss megrega our teacher. then had a go at a musical futures project where we sang a 4 chord progression .then we worked on sports song for our assembly wich the whole school took part in.

  38. I /LAC MUSEC .
    I LAC Drums.
    I like singing songs.
I like listening to Sonic songs at home.

  39. My opinion is, I enjoyed all of the lessons that I learned, especially the violin project that we did a couple of months ago. some of it challenged me but most of them were fun and easy,Y5 did some percussion and learn how to use violins and how to play a song, and learn sports songs for sports day.

At home, I don’t really have anyone who plays instruments but in my spare time, I play either acoustic or electric guitar and then I show it to my mum or dad to see if I achieved my goal or needs a little bit of practising.(I am a grade two guitarist)

In the violin project, it was easy but it was sometimes difficult and I felt like giving up waiting for others but most of the time it was fun playing with your friends and classmates.
When we did sports songs we sang a lot of songs for the event happening on Friday, sports day

  40. I think I have made progress in learning different lyrics and being able to memorise them such as when we started to do Benjamin Britten songs. Also, I am in Violin lessons when school ends on a Monday. I find it interesting and there are always little tips Miss gives us to improve. Out of school, I have guitar lessons and I am in Grade 3. I find it very easy. I am in choir also and I love singing and having fun with my friends there. What I would like to do as a class for free music lessons is practicing music from different cultures as well as practicing Djembes. It would be fun if we have an assembly about that.

  41. Well, to start with, I am in choir. Not a professional singer, and I guess singing might not be on my ‘might be’ list. I have been in piano ever since I was seven, and now I’m preparing for the examination to get into grade 3. My Mum really wanted me to join the after school violin lessons, so she signed me up for it. My violin playing is rather shabby… but my Mum said these lessons are temporary. It’s nice and intriguing ( sorry if I got that wrong) anyway. Right now I really need to focus on my piano playing in order to pass to grade 3, for I’m aiming to get all the way to highest point in piano. The lessons are in Sutton Music Centre, and my friend plays guitar there every Saturday, like I do with piano on Tuesday. I do remember cuckoo and the early violin concert too. Finally, I’m just going to say I love classical and calm jazz music! Thanks for our lessons Miss! ๐Ÿ™‚

  43. During the past year ,I have thoroughly enjoyed most of our music lessons. My favorite lessons were the violin lessons . Before these lessons i hadn’t known much about violins . However by the end, I knew how to play a few pieces of music.Although I enjoy music , I do not attend any music lessons out of school. For the next few weeks until our holiday I would like to learn to play another instrument.

    • I loved the violin lesson as well as the claves the lessons were very fun and cool.
      My top 3 music lessons

  44. the music and songs in year5 are fun and exiting i enjoy playing different instruments in lessons

    • Which are your top 3 instruments to play in lessons?

  45. I think music is very fun and energetic other than its not outside! I love learning how to make a good rhythm. Not long ago, me and my friends decided to make a band as it progressed through the years music became my main passion I learnt how to play the keyboard and learning how to play the guitar I wish we (our band) could have a chance to just show what we can do I was inspired by my friend McQuire, a very good musician, he introduced me to the band.

    • Thanks for sharing Borys. I would love to hear your band. Could you email me an audioclip?

  46. I think music is very fun and fluent to me .I like music with a good beat and rhythm .I play the drums with my band and I want to get the opportunity to show some of our songs to the class. We make up our own songs and we have many to show. I am very passionate about my music and how I listen and play it .I play a number of instruments such as guitar, piano and my most favourite the drums
